Obituary for Betty Jo Hearn

Mrs. Betty Jo Hearn, née White, departed this earth peacefully, following a short illness in Atlanta, Georgia on March 24, 2018. She was 86 years of age.

Mrs. Hearn is survived by her children, Etta J. Durham of Fyffe, Alabama, Donna M. Young (married to John R. Young) of Smyrna, Georgia; her grandchildren, Bonnie M. Rich (married to Randolph G. Rich) of Suwanee, Georgia, Shelby D. Stevulak (married to Dwite Stevulak) of Sharpsburg, Georgia, Robert E. Durham (married to Tammy Durham) of Williamson, Georgia, Jerry E. Durham of Sand Rock, Alabama, Jamie Durham Igl (married to Michael Igl) of Sand Rock, Alabama; her great-grandchildren, Kelly Durham, Miller G. Rich, Cody L. Stevulak, Holland A. Rich and Ashley Igl.

Mrs. Hearn was preceded in death by her loyal husband of 47 years, Willie “Pete” H. Hearn; her grandchildren, Ada Marie Durham and Randell Douglas Durham; her brother Robert “Bob” White, and her parents, Ruth and Hilliard O. “Bob” White.

Mrs. Hearn was born on January 18, 1932 in Atlanta, Georgia to Ruth and Bob White. She attended Russell High School, where she was a drum majorette and married her high school sweetheart, Pete Hearn. She and her husband made their home with their two daughters in East Point, Georgia, and then moved to Fayetteville, Georgia in 1970. Over time, they were blessed with seven grandchildren, on whom they doted and treated “as their own.” Mrs. Hearn was later blessed with five great-grand children.

Known to her grandchildren, great-grand children, and all of their friends as “Nanny,” Mrs. Hearn found purpose and joy in caring for, and loving her grandchildren. Her family remembers her as a kind, affectionate person who was always willing to do what she could to give to, serve, and encourage her loved ones. She was an accomplished, self-taught Southern cook, and through her cooking was one of the ways she expressed her love.
